Rego AU

Renew your Aussie car rego,
state by state

Most renewals can be done online with your notice. Pick your state or territory and jump straight to the official site.

The same basic flow everywhere

Portals and CTP rules differ by state, but the overall sequence is much the same.

  1. 01

    Check your renewal notice

Notices usually arrive by post, email or app 4–6 weeks before expiry. Have your payment number and number plate ready.

  2. 02

    Sort CTP and inspections

In NSW, buy a green slip first. Some states also need a roadworthy or safety inspection — check your notice.

  3. 03

    Pay online

Pay by card or BPAY on your state’s official site or app. Registration renews straight away or within a few business days.

  • Vehicles over 5 years old usually need a pink slip (safety inspection) — check your notice
  • Pay online with Service NSW or at a service centre

CTP works differently in each state

Compulsory Third Party insurance covers injury to other people if you’re in a crash. It’s not the same as comprehensive car insurance.

State How it works
NSWBuy a green slip from a private insurer first
QLD · SAChoose a CTP insurer at renewal; included in the fee
VICTAC bundled into rego
WA · TAS · ACT · NTCTP included in registration (no separate purchase)

Before you renew

Driving unregistered is illegal, and your CTP cover can drop off as well.

  • No notice? In most states you can still pay online with your number plate or client number.
  • Renewing after expiry often starts the new term from the payment date, not the old expiry — so you may only get the remaining period.
  • Concession and pension discounts only apply automatically if your card is linked with that state.
  • Cost depends on vehicle weight, engine, location and term. Check your notice or your state’s fee calculator.
